THE GOLD AWARD

It is expected that schools will continue to work consistently on the requirements of the Bronze and Silver Awards as well as those of the Gold Award.

Part I : Ownership

CRITERIA

GUIDELINES

Re-establish the Green Group The Green Group will need to be re-established to include staff, caretaker, governors, pupils, parents and friends of the school. It is expected that the Green Group will meet at least once a term to discuss the development on the Green Schools Plan within the school.
Sign the Gwynedd and Anglesey Green Schools Charter and adopt the principles anew.

Exhibit the charter in a public place within the school.

It will be necessary for the members of the Green Group to sign the charter and exhibit it in the school.
Complete, implement and regularly monitor the Green Action Plan. One of the first main tasks of the Green Group will be to complete the Green Action Plan. The main purpose of the Green Action Plan is to assist the Green Group to note the steps that will be necessary for the school to follow in order to meet the requirements of the Green Schools Plan. It is expected that members of the Green Group will regularly monitor and review the Green Action Plan.
Integrate elements of Green Schools activities into the schools curriculum activities. The Educational Pack produced by CYNNAL offers a number of curriculum activities which complement the Plan.
Form a ‘Green Newsletter’ to encourage local residents to act in a green way e.g. recycling, saving energy, travelling etc. It could be something very simple for the younger children but it would be a useful exercise in using information technology to produce a pamphlet.
Use the financial award received as a result of meeting the requirements of the Silver Award to strengthen the school’s commitment to the Plan. It should be ensured that the financial awards received by completing the requirements of the Silver Award are used for a purpose that is relevant to the principles of the Plan.

Part II : Reducing Waste

CRITERIA

GUIDELINES

Recycle photocopier, printer cartridges and batteries as well as paper and other materials. Ensure that photocopier, printer cartridges and batteries used at the school are recycled. The relevant Recycling Officers can give advice as to how to do this.
Recycle glass, cans and textiles. Ensure that any waste glass, cans and textiles produced at the school are recycled by using the correct system.
Create or place a compost bin in the school grounds A purpose built compost bin should be created or placed in the school grounds. For further information please contact the relevant Recycling Officer.
Encourage auxiliary staff who work in the kitchen to compost rotted waste. Auxiliary staff should put rotted waste in the compost bin rather than in the usual bin. A list of what can be composted can be had from the relevant Recycling Officer.
Educate children and adults in the community about the usefulness of compost and the importance of recycling. The school should encourage children and adults within the community to compost and recycle. This can be done by putting up posters, information leaflets to be distributed in the community, open day, parent newsletter.
Carry out a study of the world wide problem of waste especially in big cities and prospects for the future. A simple study where children become aware of the importance of the waste problem in big cities and try to learn how it is dealt with.

Part III : Saving energy and natural resources

CRITERIA

GUIDELINES

Implement all CALC guidelines. Ensure that CALC guidelines are implemented. The relevant Energy Efficiency Officer can offer help with this.
Set targets for reducing the use of water and energy in the school and monitor this. In co-operation with the relevant Energy Officer a target could be set for reducing the use of energy and water in the school. At the end of the year the school’s performance could be assessed against targets. (Schools would not be punished for not reaching the target!)
Purchasing equipment based on energy saving potential rather than cost (consider long term savings rather than short term savings). When the school purchases new electrical equipment, the buying cost should be considered together with the cost of running it. Equipment with a lower energy grade can cost more to buy initially but in the long term the savings made in the running costs could be more cost effective.
Decrease the use of paper within the school. Evidence should be provided that the school has reduced the use of paper as a result of adopting some of the suggestions found within the Plan. If this is unsuccessful, evidence should be included that the use of paper has increased together with reasons why.
A percentage which is higher than 25% of the paper bought by the school to be environmental friendly. Ensure that a considerable percentage of the school’s paper is environmentally friendly. That is, ensure that paper or a percentage of it is recycled paper, or that the paper comes from a source of sustainable timber, or that the paper is sourced from wood that is approved by the FSC.
Work in liaison with the Save Energy Trust so as to give guidance to homes. Encourage school parents / the community to complete the questionnaires of the Save Energy Trust.

Part IV : Reduce and prevent pollution

CRITERIA

GUIDELINES

Ensure that an environmental questionnaire is sent to contractors so as to assess the environmental impact of companies that supply and serve the school. Plan a simple questionnaire using the main headings of the GS plan (Reducing waste, saving energy and natural resources, Reduce and stop pollution, looking after the local environment) to enquire about the environmental impact of the companies who provide services to the school and ask whether they have environmental policies.
Work with the local community to look for a place to plant trees so as to lessen the effect of the carbon dioxide that the community produces. Identify a spot somewhere in the school grounds or within the local community where trees could be planted in liaison with members of the community. This could be done with a community group such as the Community/Town Council, Women’s Institute, the Urdd, Young Farmers, Friends of the Earth etc.
Conduct a review of the environmental impact of the school and prepare a short statement outlining how the school intends to lessen this impact. Conduct a simple review of the main impact of the school on the environment and prepare a statement outlining how the school intends to lessen its environmental impact i.e. recycle materials, using less energy etc.

Part V : Looking after the local and global environment

CRITERIA

GUIDELINES

Establish a garden/wild life patch (with the local community?) Establish a garden or patch for wildlife on the school grounds.
Implement one of the activities on the list prepared for the Silver Award which would contribute towards maintaining the biodiversity of the school grounds. Ensure the implementation of one of the activities for maintaining the schools biodiversity that was identified in the silver award.
Encourage homes to adopt the principles of the Gwynedd and Môn Green Schools Charter. Adapt the Green Schools Charter and distribute to homes in the community and ask the residents to adopt the principles and sign.
Look at environmental problems in other part of the world, what causes it and its effects? How should / is the problem be resolved? Look at one current environmental problem somewhere in the world; encroaching deserts and different ways of resolving this, the increase in sea levels as a result of global warming, using rain forests trees. Much information can be received from magazines, newspapers and on the internet.

Part VI : Travelling wisely

CRITERIA

GUIDELINES

Ensure that the school draws out a green travelling plant. The school should devise a green travelling plan. For further guidance you can contact the relevant officer within the Council. (Gwynedd Council have a template that can be adapted by individual schools – hopefully it will be ready soon!)
Educate the community about more environmentally friendly ways of travelling. Circulate information regarding environmentally clean ways of travelling.

Once the school has reached the gold award standard it is expected that they will still attain the criteria yearly so as to keep the award, and can present evidence of this. It is expected that they produce a yearly action plan so as to enhance their environmental performance based on the headings within the Plan.
